Due dates are a part of most classes. Projects are assigned and must be turned in at a certain time. Some teachers are very strict about this and others are more flexible. This semester in Art One I've gotten rid of most due dates for projects. Instead I'm assigning all projects up front and letting you work through them at your own pace and in the order you choose. What do you think about this style of teaching? Does it work for you or not? How does it effect your artwork?

I have more time to work and I don't have to worry about due dates. I like it a lot more.

I think it's better to have no due dates. I don't feel rushed so I can focus more and make better drawings.

I love this idea because it relieves everyday stresses on students with other classes. In 8th grade i took pottery and we had to do written critics that were difficult and due by the end of the class. This is very nice because it gives students time to breathe in between assignments. Good Idea Ms. Purtee, I think this is a Scone-Worthy Comment.

Deadlines give a classroom structure and it gives students baselines for when projects should be completed. I like the idea of being able to work at my own pace and skip around through projects. The only thing that I would like in a classroom is a baseline of when projects should be done.

I agree with this style of teaching for art class specifically. It allows us to take our time with projects that we specifically enjoy, and we aren't held back if we want to move on from an assignment. It works for me because I don't feel pressured to rush, and if I feel the need to start over I have that option. I think this allows me to add more detail and be more creative with my artwork. Also, being able to go from project to project in any order we chose is beneficial because sometimes an idea doesn't come to mind right away so you don't have to force a project on yourself. I also have the option to skip to a project if I desire. If the teacher introduces a new project and I immediately picture what I want to do, I am alloud to act on that idea immediately.

I like it alot because each student works at a different pace so this will allow them to finish their art work without being rushed

I like that you are asking your students their thoughts about deadlines. My Art 1 students have deadlines, because I have so many techniques and lessons that I want to get them through, that we have to have deadlines to get through it all. Not to mention I have a few students that if they didn't have a deadline would just not do it.

I'm interested in this concept. Some practical questions: how do you manage grades? We have 9 week report cards, 3 week interim progress reports. If your students are working at different paces, how do you ensure the PR, RC grades? I have several students who do the bare minimum always. How does this play out with those kind of students?

I have the same questions. I am going nuts trying to manage 7 preps. I fear the materials nightmare and how you would grade. I also think about how this translates to a job. Employers don't let you have open ended deadlines. I would love to know how this works.

The idea is nice, but how do you deal with grades? We are on a 6 week marking period system, which are sometimes only 5 weeks, and I have to have 2 grades per week. Also, how is it for you with introducing new ideas all over the place? Many of my kids never took ary before high school.
